Thank you to everyone that supported our first-ever Summer Ocean Party with Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE) and Cordell Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the evening was a great success! The focus of the party was our long-standing work to stop bottom trawling and protect deep-sea corals and sponges. They are some of the oldest living animals that we know of and our team, in partnership with MARE, was thrilled to premiere video taken with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) during our Channel Islands expedition to find these rare seafloor communities. It was wonderful sharing glimpses of the deep with engaged partygoers, while having a really good time.
Many great sponsors and organizations helped make the Summer Ocean Party a night to remember. The Baum Family Foundation’s assistance allowed us to hold the event, and Lagunitas Petaluma Taproom and Beer Sanctuary gave us the perfect space to entertain our guests. The following businesses also made it a success:
- Three Twins Ice Cream
- Revive Kombucha
- Petaluma Market
- Clif Bar
- 2 Mile Surf Shop
- 24 Hour Fitness
- Henthorne Art Foto
- Straus Home Ranch
- Clavey Paddlesports
- Pinnacles Dive Center
- Viansa Sonoma
- James J. Forni
- The Sea of Change Trading Company
- Chunky’s Taquería
- Sol Horizon
- The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
- Playful Nature
- Salty Blue Designs
All of these supporter’s contributions enabled us to focus on showcasing the Channel Islands’ deep-sea wildlife and our work to protect it. It was so great to mingle with our attendees after presenting and, of course, to dance to live music by Sol Horizon!
Hearing Sol Horizon’s energetic brand of reggae funk fusion, we understood why they’ve been ranked the best reggae band in the North Bay: they rock! Their music wasn’t the evening’s only fun attraction, as MARE brought the BATFish, a hydrodynamic tow-sled that collects state-of-the-art marine data. Scientists have said that the BATFish helps fill a big gap in research technology, so seeing this innovative device up close was a unique treat. MARE will hold their 15th Anniversary MARE Soirée on November 9, 2018 in San Francisco, so save the date and sign up for their newsletter to get more information.
The Summer Ocean Party would not have been possible without our cohosts MARE and the Cordell Marine Sanctuary Foundation, as well as the help of our amazing interns and volunteers. Connecting with so many fellow ocean advocates at the party was a heartening reminder that our blue planet brings people together in many ways. We won’t stop fighting for our oceans, from the seafloor to the shallows and high seas, and we can’t wait to see everyone at our next ocean party!
